An Interview With Alma Bond

Tell us a bit about yourself. What would you like us to know about you?

Alma H. Bond, Ph.D.received her Ph.D. in Developmental Psychology at Columbia University. She subsequently became a psychoanalyst, and was in private practice for 37 years. Since her Aretirement@ from practice in 1991, Dr. Bond has had 12 books published, including Camille Claudel, a Novel, Tales of Psychology: Short Stories to Make You Wise, The Autobiography of Maria Callas, a Novel, and Who Killed Virginia Woolf? A Psychobiography. She belongs to the International Psychoanalytic Association, the American Psychological Association, and is a fellow and former instructor of the Institute for Psychoanalytic Training and Research. She also is a member of the Dramatists Guild, American Society of Journalists and Authors, Florida Freelance Writers Association, and a faculty member of WritingSchool online, where she teaches Psychology and Writing.

What are you doing now? (Career? Married? Single? Children? Pets?)

Dr. Bond is the widow of Rudy Bond, stage and screen actor and published author. She is the mother of three children, all of whom have published books. She has seven young grandchildren, none of whom have been published yet.
She is now writing a play about Bella Abzug called (of course) Bella!

Virginia Woolf's "Every secret of a writer's soul, every experience of his life, every quality of his mind is written large in his works."
My writing is me.

What is your most favourite quality about yourself?

I am a loner.

What is the least favourite quality about yourself?

I am a loner.

If you could go anywhere in the world right now, where would it be and why?

Bali, the most beautiful place I have ever been.

What inspires you to write and why?

I have to write.

What is your favourite book and why?

Virginia Woolf's "To the Lighthouse." It is very beautiful and is written from the depths of her soul.

What is your favourite genre and why?

Biography. As a psychologist, I like to know about people.

List your three favourite authors (any genre) and why?

Freud, who contributed more to knowledge o the human mind than any other individual.
Shakespeare, the greatest author who ever lived.
Virginia Woolf, the greatest of our modern writers.

What do you think makes a writer successful?

Persistence and talent, in that order

Whta is it that makes you successful as a writer?

Persistance and talent.

What are your goals as a writer?

To write a beautiful, insightful novel that will teach the reader all I know about psychology. I wouldn't mind if it makes the best seller list.

What is the best tip you can give to fellow writers?

Keep at it.

What do you hope to provide your readers with through your writing?

Insight into human nature and a good story.

Dr. Bond has had twelve books published. Camille Claudel, a Novel, Tales of Psychology: Stories to Make You Wise, The Autobiography of Maria Callas, a Novel, Who Killed Virginia Woolf? A Psychobiography, (a Behavioral Science Book-of-the-Month Club alternate), On Becoming a Grandparent , Is There Life After Analysis?, Dream Portrait, and America’s First Woman Warrior: The Courage of Deborah Sampson (with Lucy Freeman), now under option in Hollywood. Her play Maria (also about Maria Callas) was recently presented at Ye Waverly Inn Theatre in Manhattan. It also received a prize at the Southern Appalachian Repertory Theatre, where it was given a reading.

How long did it take you to write your book(s)?

From 1-3 years.

What would you do differently if you could repeat the same publishing experience?

If I were a young woman again, I would be a journalist, as I think in that world you get to know important people who can help find good publishers.

What have you learned about the publishing world?

It is very difficult. Sucess is as contingent on luck as anything else.
