An Interview With Barbara WatkinsTell us a bit about yourself. What would you like us to know about you? I'm from a small town in the midwest and i'm forty-seven year's old going on sixteen, or so my children say. I started writing poems at an early age and then turned to short stories, and more recently to writing novella's. I'm also in the progress of writing a full length novel that i'm very excited about. Having Experienced supernatural phenomena first hand on several occations in my life i decided to incorporate some of the events into my first novella, 'Behind the Red Door.' Much of my second novela, 'Thorns of an Innocent Soul' was taken from several occuring nightmares. Whether most people believe in supernatural phenomena or dismiss the possibility of its existence... all are just a little bit curious. What are you doing now? (Career? Married? Single? Children? Pets?) Married for thirty year's to my childhood sweetheart we have two handsome son's and a beautiful daughter, through which we were blessed with four precious grand-children. Also included in our family is our psycho cat named Mila, and Hootch our ferocious guard dog. What is your favourite food? Italian What is your favourite colour? Mauve What is your favourite sound? The laughter of children. Who is your favourite person? My Mother, without her I wouldn't be giving this interview! What is your favourite place? Anywhere me and my family can be together. What is your favourite memory? The birth of my children and grand-children. What is your favourite article of clothing? Pajamas! What is your favourite word? Mammaw, but I'm not sure that's in the dictionary! What is your favourite writers' quote and why? It goes something like this, "You know you are an established writer when the first royality check comes and you can take it and pay your electric bill" Stephen King. He never gave up on himself or his writing to spite what the critics thought about his work. What is your most favourite quality about yourself? I'm quite loyal. What is the least favourite quality about yourself? Quite often I'm too impatient when it comes to getting something done. If you could go anywhere in the world right now, where would it be and why? Italy. I've just always been drawn there. What inspires you to write and why? The need to tell a story. I love making up colorful characters and puting them in an interesting situation. It just so happens most of the time some sort of terror is involved. What is your favourite book and why? 'The Store' by Stephen King. He makes you feel as if you know each and every character personaly by giving you such great detail about them. It's a thriller through and through. What is your favourite genre and why? Suspense/Thriller with a little Horror!!! List your three favourite authors (any genre) and why? Stephen King. Horror king!!! What do you think makes a writer successful? Being truthful to his writing. Researching and knowing what he or she wants to express with ones own style. You have to stay focused and be able to accept criticsm when it comes...and it will. Whta is it that makes you successful as a writer? The fulfillment I experience after I've completed my novel, short story, or novella only heightens my eagerness to promote it. I feel successful if after I finish my work I can say I'm satisfied. What are your goals as a writer? I'd like to see my work adapted to film. What is the best tip you can give to fellow writers? Write as much as you can and when you feel you can't write anymore...write somemore! Join a writer's group and learn as much about your craft as you possibly can. Never give up on your dream! What do you hope to provide your readers with through your writing? An escape. A place they can go to and be terrorized, frightend, thrilled beyond imagination; A place where that any other time they would never venture to imagine but only in their wildest nightmares!!!!!! List your three favourite online writer-resource sites and why (include URLS). www.writersdigest.com Contest and filled with information on writing. If you have published a book, tell us about your publishing success (title, publishing date and company, where it is available to purcahse). 'Behind the Red Door' published in 2005 with PublishAmerica. Available nationwide and online bookstores and through my site, www.barbezbooks.com How long did it take you to write your book(s)? 'Behind the Red Door' six months. What would you do differently if you could repeat the same publishing experience? It's almost necessary to aquire an agent if you want full exposure for your work. If they believe in your work they fight to get you a profitable advance and recognition. What have you learned about the publishing world? It's a ruthless operation most of the time. What I mean by that is, no matter what opinion you may have considering your work it's theirs that matter. Your work will more than likely be rejected numerous times but all it takes is that one publisher to believe in you. This is your chance to 'Talk Back' to your readers. What would you like to say to them? Only that they would give my novella's a chance. Not everyone likes a psychological/suspense/thriller but if you do I think you will enjoy my work. What's the one thing that you want them to know about your writing? I put my heart and soul into my writing. My objective is to entertain my reader, take them to places they would never want to go in reality but would love to in what I call my make believe world. Well, mostly make believe!!!! |
