An Interview With Cliff Ball

Tell us a bit about yourself. What would you like us to know about you?

I'm 34 years old. Currently going to Midwestern State in Wichita Falls to obtain a BA in English. Had a short story I wrote in high school published in a magazine back in 1992. Have submitted to contests like Star Trek New Worlds and Writer's of the Future. Have some articles, stories, and poetry online at Helium.com

What are you doing now? (Career? Married? Single? Children? Pets?)

I'm single. Currently a student and working full time for the Wichita Falls Public Library. Once I graduate, I'd like to use my writing skills in a field that utilizes written communication, such as an editor, proofreader, etc.

What is your favourite food?

I don't really have any favorite foods

What is your favourite colour?

Blue and green

What is your favourite sound?

I don't know, most sounds kind of annoy me.

Who is your favourite person?

What is your favourite place?

What is your favourite memory?

What is your favourite article of clothing?

What is your favourite word?

What is your favourite writers' quote and why?

What is your most favourite quality about yourself?

What is the least favourite quality about yourself?

If you could go anywhere in the world right now, where would it be and why?

Probably the Rocky Mountains. Get that time to myself so I can immerse myself in trying to write. Or not.

What inspires you to write and why?

I've wanted to write since I was 10. As to why, I don't know, a small part of me wants recognition I guess.

What is your favourite book and why?

I have a lot of favorites. Mostly in the alternate history genre.

What is your favourite genre and why?

I'm into science fiction, mostly the time travel or alternate history sub-genre. I'm a history minor and I just like to read some authors' take on a what-if this or that happened.

List your three favourite authors (any genre) and why?

Harry Turtledove, for his alternate history novels.
Tom Clancy - military fiction
Eric Flint - the 1632 series

What do you think makes a writer successful?

Being able to tell a story that anyone can read, understand, and enjoy.

Whta is it that makes you successful as a writer?

I don't know yet!

What are your goals as a writer?

My goals are to get myself out there for companies who hire writers for various projects they need done. I figure if I can show I'm a published author, I'm half-way there. I just want to write mostly though, even if I don't get anyone to read anything of mine, at least I tried.

What is the best tip you can give to fellow writers?

Do plenty of research if you want to go the self-published route. Be patient, and get some people to read your pre-published work to see if its enjoyable.

What do you hope to provide your readers with through your writing?

I would just like for them to be entertained. None of this "I want to change the world" with my writing.

List your three favourite online writer-resource sites and why (include URLS).

If you have published a book, tell us about your publishing success (title, publishing date and company, where it is available to purcahse).

I self-published Out of Time through Iuniverse in February. They required me to edit the author proofs myself, so even though I nitpicked it to death, there are still annoying little problems I have found that I didn't see until it was published. It is available to purchase on Iuniverse, Barnes and Noble.com, and Amazon.com.

How long did it take you to write your book(s)?

I started it in 1997 and kept adding ideas to it. Then, I just nitpicked it for too long and then decided I needed to publish it and get it out of the way.

What would you do differently if you could repeat the same publishing experience?

I would do more research into where to get it published. I would have friends and family read it to point out where it needs polishing and more detailed.

What have you learned about the publishing world?

Just that marketing your book yourself is a royal pain.

This is your chance to 'Talk Back' to your readers. What would you like to say to them?

Even though this is my first book, please give it a chance. Remember, Stephen King, James Patterson, J.K. Rowling, etc all had to start somewhere.

What's the one thing that you want them to know about your writing?
