An Interview With Estevan Vega

Tell us a bit about yourself. What would you like us to know about you?

Well, my name is Estevan Vega; I like long walks on the beach and breakfast in bed. I am the author of two novels: The Sacred Sin, which was recently released, and Servant of the Realm. I am 18 years old.

What are you doing now? (Career? Married? Single? Children? Pets?)

Studying creative writing at Roger Williams University.

What is your favourite food?

Being a Hispanic myself, I would have to go with chicken rice and beans. It kicks the crap out of pizza.

What is your favourite colour?

Blue, hands down.

What is your favourite sound?

The sound of rock music.

Who is your favourite person?

Christ.

What is your favourite place?

Home.

What is your favourite memory?

When my family was together...in my childhood.

What is your favourite article of clothing?

I have this new hat, and I use every excuse I can to wear it.

What is your favourite word?

Probably nonplussed. For those of you less erudite folks out there, it means confused. And it was used in the movie Kiss, Kiss, Bang, Bang, which I happened to love.

What is your favourite writers' quote and why?

Too many great people have said too many great things to choose one.

What is your most favourite quality about yourself?

I would have to go with my love for movies, music and writing.

What is the least favourite quality about yourself?

My indecisiveness.

If you could go anywhere in the world right now, where would it be and why?

Barcelona, because it it absolutely beautiful.

What inspires you to write and why?

This changes. Sometimes it's a book I'm reading, a movie I'm watching, a situation that happens (usually a crappy one) in my life. And occasionally re-reading some of my own work helps spark something.

What is your favourite book and why?

I loved The Great Gatsby. I'm not a hundred percent certain why this book rocks, but it just does. Maybe it was the characters. I'm a very character-driven writer, so that might be what drew me to it.

What is your favourite genre and why?

I like dark stuff, what many people might call depressing. I love the classic movies like Soylent Green and Planet of the Apes, Gattaca,I am Legend (the novel), movies and books that don't necessarily end the way you want them to, but the way it might happen in reality.

List your three favourite authors (any genre) and why?

Stephen King--because he can write anything

Ted Dekker--because he brings a lot to the table: spiritual, action, and ingenuity.

Shakespeare--I had to include him in my top three.

What do you think makes a writer successful?

Not quitting.

Whta is it that makes you successful as a writer?

My age might have something to do with it, but in order for any writer to be successful, he must first realize he is not the greatest writer that ever lived, and that writing is an evolution, like life. Brilliance comes through time. It also doesn't hurt to have a stable belief in something. My faith has encouraged me and kept me strong over the past few years. So, I guess it's different for everybody, but you gotta stick with it. Quitting cannot even be a thought.

What are your goals as a writer?

To really live and really love.

What is the best tip you can give to fellow writers?

Write as often as you can. Take inspiration from everything in your life, whether you read a ton of books or watch a boatload of great movies. And especially draw from the natural, ever-flowing well that is your life.

What do you hope to provide your readers with through your writing?

A bigger perspective on life.

If you have published a book, tell us about your publishing success (title, publishing date and company, where it is available to purcahse).

My newest novel is called The Sacred Sin, and it was released on August of 2007 through PublishAmerica. It's available everywhere on the web: barnes and noble, amazon, powell's, target, borders and your local bookstore. I also have another book out titled Servant of the Realm, which was published when I was 15.

How long did it take you to write your book(s)?

Around three years.

What would you do differently if you could repeat the same publishing experience?

I should have written more daily. Other than that, probably find a larger, more dedicated publisher.

What have you learned about the publishing world?

It is real horrorshow.

This is your chance to 'Talk Back' to your readers. What would you like to say to them?

If you've read anything I've written, thank you. If not, I will be sending hate mail accordingly.

What's the one thing that you want them to know about your writing?

My writing is the best way for anyone to get a perspective on who I am. That's what I love about writing--it's my chance to be completely honest with others and myself. Those are my thoughts cluttering up those pages, those are my beliefs, my ideas, my characters. Writing allows me to create something beautiful, and it's a blessing all of us are granted. We can all create, but sometimes I think people get so hung up on what to create that they miss the point. Creation in its nature is good and beautiful, so long as our hearts are in their proper places, and our logs are removed from our eyes. It all starts with the man in the mirror; and that's usually where my novels, stories or poems start.
