An Interview With Jennifer HollowellTell us a bit about yourself. What would you like us to know about you? I've been in the writing and publishing industry for as long as I can remember. It wasn't until 1999, though, that I really started looking at it as a career. Adding art to the mix in 2004 has certainly rounded things out and made everything a lot more interesting. What are you doing now? (Career? Married? Single? Children? Pets?) I'm writing part time, creating art part time and trying to get it all sold. Add raising three children (a five year old boy, a six year old girl and a five year old boy) and managing the household to that and it's *very* busy around here. What is your favourite food? My favorite food? Just one? Cheesecake. New York style, of course. What is your favourite colour? Cobalt blue. What is your favourite sound? My children laughing. Who is your favourite person? Chris. He's my rock. What is your favourite place? My studio. What is your favourite memory? Playing "Rock 'em Sock 'em" robots with my sister. What is your favourite article of clothing? My brown sweater. What is your favourite word? Persnickity. What is your favourite writers' quote and why? It's better to know the truth and beware than believe a lie and not care. I can't remember who wrote that (it's been a long time since I first heard it . . . high school?), but it's one that I've lived by daily. If you don't have truth, you don't have anything. What is your most favourite quality about yourself? My honesty. What is the least favourite quality about yourself? My obsessive compulsive behaviors. If you could go anywhere in the world right now, where would it be and why? Albuquerque, New Mexico. I lived there several years back and it was such a wonderful experience - the culture, the arts, the festivals, the weather. I loved every minute. What inspires you to write and why? Life. So much is happening all the time and I'm constantly grabbing for my idea notebook. What is your favourite book and why? Creative License. (this was a toss up between this one and SARK's Make Your Creative Dreams Real) I enjoy books that teach me that I really can live the kind of creative life I'm craving. What is your favourite genre and why? I'm addicted to self-help non-fiction books or books where there's some sort of struggle that needs to be overcome. I love new ways of improving life. List your three favourite authors (any genre) and why? Jenna Glatzer: she's taught me a lot about this business. What do you think makes a writer successful? Being persistant, constantly improving their skills, accepting criticisms, staying positive and not giving up on goals. Whta is it that makes you successful as a writer? I'm very motivated and aggressive on a daily basis. I'm frequently told how I inspire my peers to "get up and go" and "Jenn's probably not just lying around feeling sorry for herself, so I won't either." Comments like that motivate me to achieve more. What are your goals as a writer? I have several that fall very much in line with most other writers. I want to be published by a large house, I want to be picked up by magazines more often, and I want to educate others about achieving those goals. What is the best tip you can give to fellow writers? Don't wait for your phone to ring. If you're not knocking on doors and keeping your name in the air, you're not doing enough. Things will happen if *you* make them happen. What do you hope to provide your readers with through your writing? Like with the self-help books I'm addicted to, I hope to improve some aspect of their life in some way. List your three favourite online writer-resource sites and why (include URLS). Absolute Write: www.absolutewrite.com Because, even when I can't find what I'm looking for on the main site, the forums are a wealth of information. If you have published a book, tell us about your publishing success (title, publishing date and company, where it is available to purcahse). I've published two books: How long did it take you to write your book(s)? My books are comprised solely of my art work at this point and one will be published during each month of the year. Later books will include journal entries and how-to projects. Each book takes a month to create (and it's necessary to create daily to achieve this goal). What would you do differently if you could repeat the same publishing experience? I'd like to offer a choice between softcover and hardcover, but Lulu.com doesn't provide that option. What have you learned about the publishing world? I worked with authors on marketing and promoting their books in the past, so I've already experienced what it's like in the trenches. As a result, it's make a me a little gun-shy about what approach to take with promoting my own books. This is your chance to 'Talk Back' to your readers. What would you like to say to them? Your on-going support over the years has meant the world to me. With all the up's and down's I've experienced with my health (heart surgery in 2004, another heart surgery in 2005 and a battle with cancer in 2006), there has always been one positive constant - you, the reader. What's the one thing that you want them to know about your writing? It's progressing and growing daily. I fell off the radar when my health started becoming a challenge, but now I'm back! |
