An Interview With Brian L PorterTell us a bit about yourself. What would you like us to know about you? Im 54 years old and turned to writng after suffering from Depression and finding myself unable to pursue my former career. I was once in the Royal Air Force, and now find that writing totally consumes my waking hours. I've had a number of short stories published and in addition to The Nemesis Cell and Avenue of the Dead, both published as e-books, my first print novel, a dark psychological thriller entitled 'A Study in Red - The Secret Journal of Jack the Ripper' is due for release in paperback in March 2008, published by Quill Pen.net Press What are you doing now? (Career? Married? Single? Children? Pets?) I'm amrried to Juliet, and we live in Yorkshire with Juliet's two daughters by a previous marriage, and our four dogs, all of whom came from our local animal sanctuary after having suffered varying forms of abuse or neglect before coming to us. What is your favourite food? Curry (the hotter the better) What is your favourite colour? Royal blue, (the colour of my soccer teams' shirts) What is your favourite sound? The sound of Latin music Who is your favourite person? My wife. What is your favourite place? Puerto Vallarta, Mexico What is your favourite memory? Having wanted to join the RAF from being a young boy my favourite meory has to be the day of my passing out parade when I knew that I'd finally made it to where I wanted to be. What is your favourite article of clothing? A blazer which carries the RAF crest on the breast pocket What is your favourite word? Happy, because I thnk that's what we all should always be. What is your favourite writers' quote and why? What is your most favourite quality about yourself? Patience What is the least favourite quality about yourself? I take rejection very much to heart and sort of sulk for a while after receiving one. If you could go anywhere in the world right now, where would it be and why? Puerto Vallarta, because I fell in love with the town and the people many years ago and would love to return. What inspires you to write and why? I am inspired by my own observations of the world and of people around me, many of whom find their way into my books, (heavily disguised of course). What is your favourite book and why? The Adventures of Sherlock Holmes by Sir Arthur Conan Doyle, the finest collection of short crime stories I have ever read. I can and do read these tales over and over again. What is your favourite genre and why? Crime/thriller, because I have always enjoyed reading the genre and find it relatively easy to convert my own idead and theories into the stories I write. I also enjoy the research that goes along with writing this genre in terms of the work I do in studying forensics, criminal psychology and many othe fields relating to the criminal mind. List your three favourite authors (any genre) and why? Clive Cussler, James Patterson and Sir Artur Conan Doyle, all pefect exponents of their craft and whose stories help to inspire my own writing. What do you think makes a writer successful? Perseverance, self-belief and a will to succeed against the odds. Whta is it that makes you successful as a writer? I hope it is that my work is appreciated and enjoyed by those who read it and that by reading one of my stories the reader will want more. What are your goals as a writer? I would love to see my work on the bookshelves of my local library and in bookstores next to those of the writers I personally admire. What is the best tip you can give to fellow writers? Believe in yourself and in your work. Be prepared to accept constructive criticism and be realistic in your early goals. Don't try to run before you can walk. Be patient and determined and don't be put off by rejection slips. WE all get them, but somewhere out there there is a publisher who will want your work if it's good enough. What do you hope to provide your readers with through your writing? Entertainment, enjoyment and an escape into a fintional world that relieves the stresses and strains of everyday life. List your three favourite online writer-resource sites and why (include URLS). www.firstwriter.com If you have published a book, tell us about your publishing success (title, publishing date and company, where it is available to purcahse). The Nemesis Cell is a crime thriller published in May 2006 by Stonehedge Publishing of Alabama and available by visitng their website at www.stonehedgepublishing.com and visiting their weblinks page for access to a number of online retailers stocking the book. How long did it take you to write your book(s)? Approximately 3 months for each book. What would you do differently if you could repeat the same publishing experience? Nothing, I was perfectly happy with the way the process was handled by my publisher. What have you learned about the publishing world? That success is ust around the corner if you can take an objective view and try to write not just what you want to write but what the publishers think the public wants to read. This is your chance to 'Talk Back' to your readers. What would you like to say to them? Please read and enjoy my books. Without the readers there could be no authors. If you read and enjoy one, then pleae, but another. Visit my website and leave your feedback for me. You can find me at www.freewebs.com.brianlp/ What's the one thing that you want them to know about your writing? Everything I write is from the heart. I put everytihg into my work, both in terms of research and personal effort. Every stroy I write is a little piece of me, I'm always in there in every word, every phrase. I love my writing, I could nothing else, and I hope that will come across to the readers who honour me by buying my books. |
