An Interview With Albert Williams

Tell us a bit about yourself. What would you like us to know about you?

Albert Williams, (44) was born in Emsworth in the United Kingdom (UK) on June 10th 1962.[size=10pt][/size] At the age of ten, he migrated to the Commonwealth of Dominica. Between,1981 and 2002, his by-line has appeared in all of the local periodicals in Dominica: The Chronicle, The Tropical Star, The Independent, The Voice of the People and The Sun as a free-lance contributor and columnist of scores of articles, short stories poems and other features. From June 2002 to March 2004 upon receiving a diploma in journalism/Short Story Writing from Harcourt Learning Direct, a correspondence school, he was invited to join Dominica’s oldest and most read newspaper: The Chronicle as a full-time reporter and photographer. His duties included reporting on incidents, events and personalities as they occurred for publication. In addition, the writing and rewriting of articles and features, as well as the proofreading of pages. While at the newspaper, Albert joined the Media Workers Association of Dominica (MWAD), and served as its secretary for a few months



SPECIAL INTERESTS

Albert is recognised as a talented individual who has show a keen interest in many areas of the fine arts. Besides having written and self-published three booklets of poetry and a collection of short stories, namely: Honourable Natty Dread, (1982,1990&1996); One Dominica-Odes for I Beloved, (1985) and Through The Far Eye ISBN 976-8155-00-0(1996) and Haunted Heritage and Other Stories ISBN 1-4241-0680-X, In 1997, he was nominated for the DBS Radio FAME Award for Best Radio Program for the one-hour, literary radio program that he produced and presented for the Dominica Writers Guild (DWG). The show, Review was aired on the Dominican FM radio station, Kairi FM on Tuesday’s, Thursday’s and Sunday's. Albert is also a founding member of the Dominica Writers’ Guild (DWG) established in 1982.In addition, to being one of several young persons who founded the Frontline Cooperative Bookstore in 1983.

He has worked with organisations such as the Movement for Cultural Awareness (M.C.A.); the Ethiopian World Federation Incorporated (EWF Inc.); the Government of the Commonwealth of Dominica's, Division of Culture; the Black History Awareness Committee (B.H.A.C) and the Roseau Public Library, with which he has organized dozens of public readings, book festivals, African liberations marches and Bob Marley Awareness Days. He has also been called upon to facilitate workshops in creative writing and is also noted as an excellent performance poet

What are you doing now? (Career? Married? Single? Children? Pets?)

Right now, I am busy promoting my book.
My fiancee, Tempie and I, are working together with a number of writers forums including, Shades of Romance and book entree. We also publish a monthly newsletter, The Winning Team.

What is your favourite food?

my favorite food is red bean and curried rice with coconut milk.

What is your favourite colour?

My favorite colour is blue

What is your favourite sound?

My favorite sound is the sound of a piano.

Who is your favourite person?

My favorite person is my fiancee, Tempie King, soon to be Mrs Albert Williams

What is your favourite place?

That still quite place where God is.

What is your favourite memory?

My favorite memory is when I relased my thirdd book of poetert, through the Far Eye at the hummingbird Inn in Dominica in 1996.

It as hosted by the dominica Writers Guild. A number of fellow guild members read their favorite poems from the book, before i came to the podium and delievered my in my favorite performance style

What is your favourite article of clothing?

My birthday suit.

What is your favourite writers' quote and why?

What is your most favourite quality about yourself?

My determination.

What is the least favourite quality about yourself?

If you could go anywhere in the world right now, where would it be and why?

I would love to visit the commonwealth of dominica after a few years to walk those familar streets and to take in those specatacular sights of the mountains again.

What inspires you to write and why?

I write chiefly to inspire others

What is your favourite book and why?

Feelings by Tempie

What is your favourite genre and why?

Fiction. I love the freedom it gives to create characters and scenarios

List your three favourite authors (any genre) and why?

Richard Wright(fiction) for his description

Rabindanath Tagore (poetry) for his use of imagery

Tempie (Fiction)for her story telling craft.

What do you think makes a writer successful?

Being able to start and complete a project regardless of moods.

Whta is it that makes you successful as a writer?

My ability to visualize the fininshed project.

What are your goals as a writer?

To become an internationall best seller.

To earn enough money to live comfortably.

To leave my mark on posterity

What is the best tip you can give to fellow writers?

Learn the craft

Learn all you can about marketing.

Love your choosen profession with all you heart.

What do you hope to provide your readers with through your writing?

An insight into another world and the possiblities that are there.
