An Interview With Kilian Betlach

Tell us a bit about yourself. What would you like us to know about you?

I grew up in South Florida -- where my book is set -- a place that could only be built upon after draining the Everglades. It was here that I learned everything I know about punk rock, late-night eateries, and the word ya'll, all of which figure prominently in my book.

What are you doing now? (Career? Married? Single? Children? Pets?)

I teach reading and writing to 7th graders who are recent immigrants, a career that recent events have politicized dramatically.

What is your favourite food?

I love all foods that are wrapped in other foods.

What is your favourite colour?

Black.

What is your favourite sound?

Overly-distorted guitars, a pounding backbeat, and wailing vocals.

Who is your favourite person?

I'm a big fan of teachers, people who can make things with their hands, non-judgmental barkeepers, anyone who popularized all those little skirts, and those capable of engaging in West Wing caliber banter.

What is your favourite place?

What is your favourite memory?

What is your favourite article of clothing?

I have this navy hoodie that I can't seem to stop wearing.

What is your favourite word?

What is your favourite writers' quote and why?

"Writing is a form of personal freedom. It frees us from the mass identity we see in the making all around us. In the end, writers will write not to be outlaw heroes of some underculture but mainly to save themselves, to survive as individuals." -Don DeLillo

What is your most favourite quality about yourself?

What is the least favourite quality about yourself?

If you could go anywhere in the world right now, where would it be and why?

What inspires you to write and why?

What is your favourite book and why?

I just finished The Time Traveler's Wife, by Audrey Niffenegger, and it stuck with me for days. There's something about the evocation of waiting and loss in the service of love that I found it hard to let go of.

What is your favourite genre and why?

List your three favourite authors (any genre) and why?

Don DeLillo for his construction of sentences.
Ernest Hemingway for his vital understatement.
Charles Bukowski for his honesty.

What do you think makes a writer successful?

Whta is it that makes you successful as a writer?

I think I have an ear for dialogue, an ability to convey the rhythms of speech and back-and-forth. I think this is important, because dialogue is an amazing tool of character development and story deepening.

What are your goals as a writer?

What is the best tip you can give to fellow writers?

What do you hope to provide your readers with through your writing?

List your three favourite online writer-resource sites and why (include URLS).

If you have published a book, tell us about your publishing success (title, publishing date and company, where it is available to purcahse).

My first novel is entitled This Feels Like A Riot Looks, published by Mutiny Pressings in a joint venture with Lulu Enterprises. It is a story of bands, booze, and betrayal. You can buy it in various San Francisco based book stores and online <A HREF="www.lulu.com/content/152027";>here.</A>

How long did it take you to write your book(s)?

What would you do differently if you could repeat the same publishing experience?

What have you learned about the publishing world?

This is your chance to 'Talk Back' to your readers. What would you like to say to them?

What's the one thing that you want them to know about your writing?

This Feels Like A Riot Looks is a story of growing up and growing apart (to paraphrase S.E. Hinton), an evocation of a time and place that has since passed away. More than that, it's a good read.
